A Q&A with Yue Yin-ho, one of Hong Kong’s two local qualifiers, alongside Humphrey Wong, who will take his place in the 2016 #UBSHKOpen line-up among some of the most recognisable names in the world of golf.
HKO: What was going through your mind when you realised you were in a three-way play-off to win a place at the UBS Hong Kong Open and how did you manage to come through so well?
YH: I did not expect much, and definitely did not expect myself to win. I didn’t fancy my chances (in the play-off) against Humphrey and Linus, so I thought the best approach was to treat it as something fun, something that will build my confidence for the future. One thing that really helped me through was something my Mum said as I was heading off to the first play-off hole, which was to “treat it as if I was playing with my buddies on a Friday afternoon”. My Dad really helped too, as we just kept smiling and talking, and not caring too much about what was happening around us. That kept me relaxed, and gave me some confidence. It all worked out pretty well.
HKO: How will the UBS Hong Kong Open help you develop your career?
YH: Definitely this is a dream come true for me. It is unreal to think that I will be playing alongside some of my idols in just a few weeks’ time. I grew up watching the UBS Hong Kong Open, which is one of the biggest professional tournaments in Asia, and I always dreamed of playing in it one day. Actually, just by qualifying for it, I already feel an impact as it is a motivation for me to work harder. I really want to do well in Fanling and show everyone what I can do. I am sure the whole UBS Hong Kong Open experience will be phenomenal and help me in my career development.
HKO: Tell us in three words what golf means to you.
YH: A challenge, a passion, and life.
HKO: Who would be your most ideal partners in foursome round?
YH: The guy with my favourite swing, Rory McIlroy, and Jason Day. Finally, the legend, Tiger Woods.
